ARG....I'm So Frustrated

Yesterday I spent time in the sewing room working on my March pieced block for the Sentimental Stitches Almost Amish BOM.  It wasn't pretty.  Have you ever seen a grown woman cry over a quilt block....well I did.  I'm always showing you something I  am proud of.  Well here is something I am not so proud of.

It is hard to see from the picture but the Y seams are buckled and the block is definitely not square.  I really don't think Y seams are my thing.  So back to the drawing board on this block....maybe I will do a totally different block.

The second project I worked on was my Floribunda quilt.

I made some more blocks...and guess what...I still don't like it.  But I think it will make a great picnic quilt.  And I think I will use this quilt to practice some  free motion quilting.  I might rethink that red block.  I'm going to have to look and see if I have anymore florals.

One good thing about yesterday...the Detroit Tigers won.  Yes...they beat the Yankees.  So far in the series they have won both games.  We will see what today brings.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Hugs, Cathy

I love the red and white colors in your Amish block. It looks pretty good to me - can you steam it into submission? If you want to try it again, follow the Eight Point Star- Sewing "Y" Seams tutorial on the Sentimental Stitches web site and I think you'll be happy with the results and hopefully no more tears.

I've shed a few tears over sewing together blocks with Y-seams... try to chalk it as a "learning experience"...

Hang in there, Cathy!

So sorry you had such a frustrating day! I always spray starch my fabrics to almost paper consistency when I have to work with a lot of bias and I get good results... maybe give that a try? Have a happy week!

You should have been at my house yesterday with me and my friend both working on Y seams. Let's just say that what was said in my sewing room, stays in my sewing room. LOL!

so sorry to hear that this one frustrated you so badly. i avoid this type of seam whenever possible because they really can be tricky.

i noticed on your previous posts that you are getting some of your BOM's done and they look nice.
i also like the small quilt that you have added to your finish list~!

keep up the good work.

Now you know why I turn tail and run when Y-seams are mentioned. Is there a way to paper piece the block--either foundation or EPP? It is a pretty block.
I didn't like my Floribunda until I added more bright yellows and deeper colored florals. They worked together to give the quilt more contrast and depth. Now I love the top--and I am planning on practicing a FMQ design on mine, too. It is such a busy top, my mistakes shouldn't be too obvious. : )

I have had Y seams not go too well. Maybe you could try removing the corners and stitching a second time. Such a nice block design.

Sorry about the y-seams. It sucks when you work so hard on a block and then you aren't happy with it. Been there. Done that. I do like doing y-seams, however. I wonder if you could paper piece the block instead? I haven't studied it enough to see if it could be paper pieced.

I have never tried Y seams yet. Maybe you could try making some of the block with 1/2 square triangles. I have seen that star done that way before and maybe it would work for a few of the other parts too.

You're very brave to show the block you're not proud of. Sorry to hear it was such a pain. I made one perfect 8-pointed star in a class once and decided I never needed to make another! LOL

I like your Floribunda quilt. I agree with you about the red block. It doesn't quite "go". You could always use the same floral fabric twice, but put with a different yellow than you did the first time, maybe? Good luck!
